Latest Updates on Visa Cap & PGWP –

For 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will issue a reduced number of study permits, capping them at 437,000. This reflects a 10% reduction from the 2024 target of 485,000 and will stabilize the cap at this level for 2026. This may result into 300,000 fewer study permits being issued over the next few years.

Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) Requirement

IRCC will now require a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from all master’s and doctoral students.

Starting November 1, 2024, new language proficiency requirements will be implemented for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Eligibility:

University Graduates: Must demonstrate a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of 7

College Graduates: Must show a CLB score of 5

The Speaking test is recorded by the Examiner for Marking Schemes.

There are three parts to the test, and each part follows a specific pattern of tasks in order to test your speaking ability in different ways.

In PART 1, you will be asked some general questions by the examiner on social topics such as your whereabouts, your hobbies, talks on your areas of interest, etc.

In PART 2, you will be shown a card asking you to speak on a particular topic or situation: One minute time is given to prepare. Thereafter, you must speak for up to two minutes and then answer general questions on the topic.

In PART 3, further questions will be asked about the topic given to the candidate in PART 2 at a stretch.

Remember, you must speak without hesitation and nervousness throughout the test. Apart from adjudicating fluency and eloquence, how well do you socialize with others using English as your language? This is one of the major concerns of the Examiner.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION:

✎ It is an Informal Speaking Test

✎ The Examiner interviewing the candidate controls the Time and length of the answers.

✎ Keeping ID (Passport ) handy is a must

✎ There is only one Speaking Test for both the test takers: Academic and General IELTS

✎ Time duration: 11-14 minutes

The Test has a time duration of 40 minutes (in a Pen & paper-based test; in a computer-based test you get 32 minutes).

TEST CONTENT & THE FORMAT AT A GLANCE:

Four Parts to attempt

10 questions in each part

Part 1: Two speakers in a conversation on a social topic
Part 2: One speaker delivering a speech, or talks on a social topic
Part 3: Three or four speakers in a conversation: educational or training subject
Part 4: One Speaker (a Professor): a lecture on an academic Subject.

✎ Pen & Paper based test: write the answers in the question booklet whilst you are listening to the audio played. An additional 10 minutes toward the end is granted to transfer the answers to the answer sheet

✎ Internet-Based Test: you may type your answers directly into the computer whilst you are listening to the audio. An additional 2 minutes is granted to review your answers.

✎ Audio will be played once only.

✎ It’s a simultaneous process of listening to the audio, reading question statements, and noting down the answers.

✎ Word count for each set of questions; try not to violate the word count given in instructions before each set of questions least you tend to end up losing marks and get a penalty for a word count violation

✎ Time is granted to read the questions before the audio turns on. This follows for each set of questions. Do not read everything in detail but just skim through the questions to get an essence of what is going to be spoken in the audio. Highlight parts of speech: proper nouns, compound nouns abstract or material nouns with the supporting adjectives in the questions given.
